Tibet or not Tibet?

Last night Monty and I once again embarked on our ethnic tour of Salt Lake. We braved the cold and the snow to try some Tibetan cuisine at Cafe Shambala. There's been so much snow here lately it was almost like we were in the mountains of Tibet. I needed a Sherpa just to help me get out of the car and trek through the snow.

Much of the food on the menu seemed like the kind of cuisine Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala might eat - a selection of Indian influenced curries and vegetarian dishes. There were also a number of Chinese dishes, but I did not come to Tibet to eat sweet and sour chicken! But really, what do I know about Tibetan food? Absolutely nothing. So I ask our very kind waiter to make some suggestions. He says, "Everything is good!" Thanks, that's helpful. We started off with the veggie momos, which are like dumplings. Tasty!

For our entrees we chose chicken chili stir fry and broccoli/cauliflower saute. They actually turned out to be very similar dishes, but both were delicious. I do wish we would have had better guidance with ordering more traditional food. Oh well. Next time I will definitely try a curry dish and something with noodles.

The most noteworthy item on the menu was the Tibetan tea. I love tea and I'll try anything...so I ordered the Tibetan tea. The waiter looked a little hesitant and asked, "Have you had it before? Do you know what Tibetan tea is?" I answered no...but you know, when in Rome. He proceeded to tell me it had butter in it. Cool. I like tea, I like butter. I'll probably like butter tea. When it finally arrived at our table I poured each of us a cup. It smelled ok, but it was this weird grayish/brown color. I tentatively took a sip while the waiter anxiously waited to see my reaction. I had to act cool because he was watching me! I didn't want to offend him, even if it tasted gross; it was a lot of pressure. The verdict: it was incredibly rich, slightly oily and kind of salty. Interesting mixture. I think there was a pinch of black tea in there somewhere. According to Wikipedia it's made with yak butter...not sure if our tea had yak butter. I hope so. I guess I can see how this would be a popular drink with the nomads in the cold, mountainous regions of central Asia. But it's also not hard to see why its appeal has yet to spread beyond Tibet. To be honest, it's really not that bad. Perhaps I just need to adjust my notion of what tea is.

After dinner we stopped by Juniors for a bit. I was hoping to finally meet Monty's girlfriend Kristina but she didn't end up coming. Monty and I had an interesting conversation. Sometimes it amazes me that we get along so well because our brains work so differently. I run on emotion; Monty runs on logic. It's a good thing though because we challenge each other to see life through a different lens. Juniors had an interesting crowd last night. There were a bunch of hot guys there for once. Did I get any pictures of them? No. But I did get a picture of this old guy playing the accordion. Only at Juniors...

I can't believe that today is the last day of January! Besides being the last day of the month, it is also Sonny's birthday. This is the best picture I have of him because apparently he doesn't like to look directly into my camera. Happy Birthday Sonny!

This and That

Things that have made me smile recently:

  • the beauty of video texting
  • hearing Amy sing "You're beautiful!"
  • listening to George Michael
  • all of my friends who said nice things about Stanley
  • shots of Jager
  • Oreos
  • planning my trip to New Orleans
  • trying to explain some perplexing Mormon theology to a gentile (Amy...ha!): blood atonement, prophets, fundamentalism, church leadership, etc
  • another ethnic dinner with Monty tonight...Tibetan
  • gossiping with Jed

Things that have NOT made me smile recently:

  • all this f-ing snow!
  • shots of Jager
  • the thought of Marsha leaving my office
  • going to the dentist and finding out I have 4 cavities
  • my loud neighbors who decided to start band practice at 3 am last night
  • oblivious people who drive 60 MPH in the left lane on the freeway

RIP Stan the Man

This morning the only dog I will ever love, Stanley, was put to sleep. He made it to the ripe old age of 17. Part me never thought he would never die...the things this dog has done! While I am so, so sad to know that I will never see him again, I know he is at peace and lived a full life.

My family got Stan from the Humane Society the summer before I started 10th grade in 1993. His previous owner was a trucker and Stan had been all over the country with him. He's a travelin' man. So we brought him home and he quickly became friends with everyone in the neighborhood. He was an extremely social dog and whenever anyone walked by the house and he was outside he jumped the fence. Either the neighbors would bring him back or he would be picked up by the pound. One day in 1999 Stan jumped the fence and he never came back. The neighbors didn't call, we checked the pound...nothing. We figured we had lost him forever.

A few years went by...my parents moved to a new house, I moved to Chicago. One night my parents got a phone call from the Humane Society informing them that Stanley had been picked up by the dog patrol. What?? This was 2002 and we hadn't heard a thing about Stan in forever. Turns out they had found my parents because Stan had a microchip installed that had my parents' contact info. So my family gladly took our beloved Stanley back in.

It gets even weirder. Not too long after that, my cousin Monty and his girlfriend Haley had to pick up my sister from school. They took her home and went in the house. Haley saw the dog and said, "Hey! That's Stanley! That's my dad's dog!" Monty was said, "No this is their dog, they've had him forever..how do you know his name??" Apparently the day that Stan ran away Haley's dad picked him up and just decided to keep him! What the hell?? He obviously had his tags on with his name, Stanley. These tags also had our phone number on it so he could have called us to return Stan. But no, he decided to dognap him. Not cool. I guess it all worked out in the end and we still laugh about that crazy dog and his travels.

Although the trucker gave Stanley his name, my family had several names for Stan: Stan the Man, Stanney, Stanlito (when we were trying to teach him Spanish), Stanicus, little bastard (what my dad liked to call him). I can't imagine going to my dad's house and not seeing him run up to me waiting for his treat. I am so sad and I will miss him forever.

Weekend Update

Apparently my weekends now start on Thursday.  Allen's right...Thursday really is the new Friday.  This weekend began with a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood at Bar Deluxe.  Girls night out!

Maberly and Lesley

The really loud band

Maberly and Metra

Maberly and I thought it might be a good idea to do shots on a weeknight...turns out it wasn't.

Next stop...Juniors for a little pool!

Metra is seriously a pool shark!

Maberly helping me multi-task

Maberly, Metra, Lesely

Me, Lesley, Metra

Friday was another girls night.  Metra, Lesley, Staci, Joshi and I tried out some fabulous Mary Kay products.  I'm pretty sure we offended the Mary Kay lady with our language, drunken stories and me pulling a condom out of my purse.  In my defense, we were supposed to be looking for stuff in our purses that started with the letter C.  We all spent too much money. Next was dinner at Porcupine, then onto the Canyon Inn for drinks.

I love the Canyon Inn, it has a good mix of people and the music is usually interesting.  The band that was playing was AWESOME! Awesome meaning bad.  The drummer had really, really long hair and there was a fan blowing at all around.  Unfortunately I don't have any pictures because my camera battery decided to die.  I tried to get a picture with Joshi's camera, but the weird bass player thought I was taking a picture of him and kept posing.  Joshi AND Staci have pictures...but they haven't sent them to me. (HINT!)  Some interesting guys sat at our table and we got some free shots.  UPDATE: Got some pictures from Joshi!

Staci, Metra and me

Tony from St. Louis who bought us shots

Lesely and Joshi

The awesome bass player

The awesome drummer...although you can't really see the fan action.

Saturday was pretty low key.  I finally saw Michael Clayton and it was pretty good.  Still not as good as No Country For Old Men or There Will Be Blood though.  I really enjoyed Tom Wilkinson's performance; he's always amazing.

Went shopping at Target, hung out with Paige.  Watched The Last Picture Show with my mom and Paige. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.  I wasn't disappointed per se...but I think I was expecting more.  Don't get me wrong, I liked it.  It was just different than I thought it would be.

Sunday is for church and I was there at 9 am this morning.  My brother Seth is going on a mission to Rome, Italy and today was his farewell.  He is so excited to go and I'm so proud of him.  I know he will do well.  It was so fun to see the family, many of whom I hadn't seen in years.  I didn't get a picture of Scottie because he was really sick. Here's a picture of him from the summer.

Mercedes wasn't there.  But the good news is she was released from jail last week and was admitted to Odyssey House for a year long treatment program. It's going to be pretty intense and I hope she sticks it out. For those of you who don't know, my sister Mercedes has struggled with meth addiction and has been in jail for about 6 months. I worry about her constantly. Here's a picture from better days

Seth looking suave and missionary-ish

I also watched Fracture with Nolan and Paige.  Not really a good movie...don't waste your time.

Happy Birthday Jeddy!

Happy Birthday to one of my best friends in the whole world! Jed is actually my cousin, but he's more like a brother to me. We've been best friends since the day he was born 29 years ago. Well, except for this short period in 1992 when he wore overall shorts and I was little too cool. We got over it.

Here are some of my favorite memories of Jed:

  • Writing letters: We've written hundreds of letters to each other over the years....from San Antonio, Kirbyville, Cedar City, various cities in Mexico. I still have most of those letters. When he was on his mission we also sent each other tapes. There's a lot of embarrassing material there.

  • Going to LDS Hospital in the middle of the night just to eat cheesecake in the cafeteria. We had to lie to get in. Well Jed lied, I just stood there trying to look believable.

  • Our trip to Portland in 1997. Crazy Mark and Heidi, South Park, walking across the Burnside Bridge, going to see The Full Monty, the crazy homeless guy on the train, Hard Times.

  • The day after Thanksgiving 1993. One word: Juggs.

  • Visiting his family in Texas in 1991 then driving back to Utah. "Let there be light!", baseball, I was convinced I saw Jim Morrison at Royal Gorge, Jed was obsessed with Paula Abdul.

  • Datenight and living up on Cortez Street (minus the dead mouse)

  • Early morning seminary in 9th grade. Jed singing hymns as an alto really loud and embarrassing me. This was during my too cool phase.

  • Watching Golden Girls

  • Alejandro Sparticus and Wendy Kroy

I hope you have a fabulous birthday Jeddy!! I love you!

iTunes Hall of Shame

So I actually wasn't going to write anything tonight. I wasn't really feeling it. I didn't get home from work until 7:30. Talked with Jed for about an hour; we had a pretty deep discussion about morals, or lack thereof rather. Then Sarah called and there went another hour. I decided to take a long, hot shower...the kind that makes your skin turn pink and your fingers all pruny. I always get good ideas in the shower. I had my iTunes on party shuffle and this really bad song came on: Don't Know Much, a lovely duet by Aaron Neville (that mole is sick!) and Linda Ronstadt.

How did this song get on my computer?? And how do I know all of the words?? I have no idea. It prompted me to look through the rest of my music and I have some pretty embarrassing stuff.

I've been told I have pretty good taste in music. I'm not so sure now. Here's a compilation of really bad music from my collection to make you smile. Enjoy!

Air Supply: Greatest Hits

Worst Air Supply song: Making Love Out of Nothing At All. Runner up: Sweet Dreams.

BJ Thomas: Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

Ok, so it's a Burt Bacahrach song, but you've got to admit it's pretty cheesy.

Bell, Biv, DeVoe: Poison

I also have a remix version. I am so sad. Favorite line: "Never trust a big butt and a smile!"

Bobby Brown: about 5 songs

These songs remind me of 6th grade and how everyone was in love with Spencer Chipping. Best (meaning worst) Bobby Brown song: My Perogative. Apparently it was Bobby Brown's perogative in 1990 to have really bad, asymmetrical hair. Awesome!

Bon Jovi: New Jersey

Remember when Bon Jovi was the coolest band ever? Yeah, me neither. Coincidentally, New Jersey was one of my first tapes...the Easter Bunny brought it to me. Seriously.

Digital Underground: The Humpty Dance

The saddest part about this song: I know ALL of the lyrics.

Keith Moon: Two Sides of the Moon

Many of you know, I love The Who and I love Keith Moon more. But the man cannot sing. He should always be drumming, even in the afterlife.

Meatloaf: I'd Do Anything For Love

Sarah and I used to record MTV circa 1990-1992. We had this video on tape several times. Meatloaf will do anything for love, but he won't do "that." What is it that he won't do??

Nelson: After the Rain, Love and Affection

I cannot begin to tell you how obsessed Sarah and I were with Nelson in 1990. She was Matthew, I was Gunnar. We wrote notes to each other in our Nelson personnas. We were freaks! BTW: That's Gunnar on the left and Matthew on the right.

New Kids on the Block: Greatest Hits

To be fair, Jed gave this to me as a joke a couple of years ago. Still, it's pretty embarrassing. Best song: Hangin' Tough. Best ballad: Please Don't Go Girl.

Starship: Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Poor Grace Slick...where did her ideals go? This is a far, far cry from Jefferson Airplane my friend. Isn't this song from Mannequin?

Trixter: One In a Million

I debated whether to include Trixter or Warrant. I decided Trixter was more emabarrassing. Plus I knew it would make Sarah laugh.

Vengaboys: We Like to Party (Vengabus)

This song will always remind me of Mexico 1999. Getting drunk every night on the beach and trying to sneak Monty into Tequilla Volleyball. Good times.
